East West Sports is owned by Jerry Stevens, who has lived in the mountain resort town of Vail Colorado for more than 40 years, during most of which he has been in the sporting goods business. 

 

During college, Jerry played handball and ran track. After college, he started playing competitive racquetball and squash, winning 3 INSILCO Regional Squash Tournaments, which earned trips to the INSILCO National Tournament each time. Afterwards, Jerry brought and ran five International Grand Prix Squash Tournaments in Vail, which the pros called the “highlight of the US Tour”. Jerry has served on the squash advisory staff for Head, Dunlop and Prince. 

Aside from racquet sports, Jerry competed on his sport shop's (sponsored) Championship Mountain Bike Race team for many years. His sport shop ran the first “Vail Pass Hill Climb Bike Race” which was later incorporated into the “Coors Classic” and “US Pro Challenge” professional bike races. Jerry also played rugby in Vail for 20 years, served as the Vail Rugby Club’s president, was named Vail Rugby Clubman of the Year numerous times, and inducted into the Vail Rugby Hall of Fame.

 

The athletic Stevens family has been excellent test subjects for the sports products sold by EWS over the years. Jerry’s wife Nancy has worked for the Vail Village Ski School for more than 30 years, and has worked as a buyer for EWS. Nancy has also taught fitness classes for more than 30 years and is an avid squash player. Their son Jonny set numerous high school track and field records, winning three state titles along the way. He received his high school Athlete of the Year and the Denver Post Colorado Hockey Player of the Year Awards. Jonny ran track and cross country at CU, and was part of two back to back Pac 12 Championship XC Teams and was All Pac 12 in the Steeple Chase. He ran on three US Mountain Running Teams, scoring for the US in all 3 World Championship races. Jonny teaches skiing in Vail and has worked part time for EWS and helped with the shop’s website development. Jonny’s twin sister McKenzie was the first girl to make her high school boys varsity ice hockey team and went on to play hockey at Middlebury College where she received the NESCAC Conference Sportsmanship Award. McKenzie plays squash and tennis and also teaches skiing in Vail. Younger sister Maddie earned 11 high school varsity letters competing in soccer, basketball, nordic skiing, track, and cross country and is currently playing for the CU Women’s Ice Hockey Team and teaching skiing on school breaks.
